Deutschwerk Vol. 1 — Root

Foundations and Alphabet

Target level: Pre-A1 to basic A1

Role in the Series

Builds the learner's mental model before conventional A1 instruction begins.

Deutschwerk is designed specifically for Persian-speaking learners and uses a comparative, structural and application-oriented approach rather than relying on direct translation equivalents or isolated grammar rules.

Across the series, every concept is considered from three perspectives:

  • Semantics — what does the structure mean?
  • Syntax — what role does each element play and how is the sentence organized?
  • Morphology — how are those grammatical roles expressed in word form and inflection?

Main Topics

  • Language, sound, letters, syllables, words and sentences
  • Difference between spoken and written language
  • German pronunciation and reading foundations
  • Umlaut, ß, sound combinations and pronunciation patterns
  • Word structure and word components
  • Nouns and grammatical gender
  • Articles and definiteness / indefiniteness
  • Plural formation
  • The four German cases and their logic
  • Pronouns and determiners
  • Adjectives and their sentence role
  • Verbs, conjugation and principal forms
  • Valency and government
  • Sentence architecture and verb position
  • Foundations of the tense system
  • Early register awareness and real spoken German

Pedagogical Focus

Persian is treated as the learner's source-language mental system, not merely as a translation language. The volume explicitly challenges misleading equivalences between Persian and German grammatical concepts.

The volume is therefore not designed only around exam exercises. It aims to connect structure with real language use and to help Persian-speaking learners understand why certain mistakes occur naturally when Persian patterns are transferred directly into German.

Relationship to Persian

Deutschwerk does not treat Persian merely as a translation language.

Persian is considered the learner's source-language system. The series therefore compares German structures with the way Persian expresses meaning, grammatical roles, definiteness, information structure and pragmatic intent.

The goal is not to force German into Persian categories, but to show where the two systems overlap and where they do not.

Real Language

Standard German remains the structural reference point, but real usage is included wherever relevant.

The series pays attention to:

  • natural spoken forms;
  • register;
  • colloquial vs. formal usage;
  • workplace and administrative language;
  • collocations;
  • modal particles;
  • pragmatic force;
  • pronunciation and intonation;
  • and the difference between a sentence that is merely correct and one that sounds natural.

Expected Outcome

Learners should understand the basic architecture of German, avoid false Persian-German equivalences, analyze simple sentences structurally, read and pronounce with better logic, and be ready to enter real A1 learning.

Place in the 11-Volume Learning Path
